Last May, ColoPlus AB, a company based in Malmö, Sweden, started a clinical study in Nigeria on its product against HIV/AIDS-related diarrhoea, which is based on colostrum. The study takes place at Braithwaite Memorial Hospital in Port Harcourt and is supervised by ColoPlus local AIDS expert Sonny Chinenye.
- We came right in were the problem is, says Mr Conny Hagman, managing director of ColoPlus. Clinical studies on colostrum as an aid to the digestive system are already ongoing at the University Hospital of Lund, Sweden.

Bovine colostrum:

Bovine colostrum has a proven therapeutic effect based on the following:
  • Content of antibodies, particularly antibodies against specific bacterias like Cryptosporidium parvum
  • Presence of antibacterial peptides such as Lactoferrin
  • Content of growth factors to support repair of a damaged intestinal mucous.
  • Human biocompatibility

Colostrum gives the new-born calf protection during the first 24 to 48 hours after birth, before maturation of its own immune system. The protection is aimed at potentially harmful pathogenic bacteria, and is mediated by the specific antibodies (immunoglobulins) and anitbacterial peptides in the colostrum

  • Clinical studies on the spot in Nigeria
Recently Conny Hagman and head of research Claes-Henrik Florén visited Nigeria to settle the basis for the clinical studies on the spot. The Swedish Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria and the Swedish Foreign Ministry have paid attention to ColoPlus and their collaboration with AIDS experts in the country.

Children with hiv in a separate study
In South Africa, a correspondent study is starting focused on children with HIV. This study is managed by professor Ingemar Ihse in cooperation with professor Hoosen Coovadia in Durban.

A first release of the ColoPlus product line is expected around summer 2004.

    Collaboration with Arla Foods
ColoPlus is collaborating with Arla Innovation which looked for applications on colostrum for some time. The current product line is a specially designed dry product that remains bioactive even when stored for long periods or shipped over long distances.

The productline is PCT patent pending.
ColoPlus has signed an exclusive agreement with Arla Foods, regarding development and production for clinical studies on colostrum based products in Lund, Nigeria and South Africa. The agreement contains among other things an exclusive option for Arla Foods to all rights for exploring the current product internationally on the consumer and medical care markets.
